Heather Hills Parent Resource Center

Posted by

"When parents get involved in their children's education, the children do better in school, are better behaved, have more positive attitudes toward school and grow up to be more successful in life."  That is the belief and inspiration behind the new Parent Resource Center at Heather Hills Elementary.  The center was started so parents would have a place of their own within the school.  The resource center will allow parents to identify with other parents who may share the same or similar stories.  "We as parents have the ability to partner with the school, and the community to help our children become successful adults," is quoted on the website.  The parent center has clinical books for parents to check out, reading materials, CD's, videos, games, and more.  It offers services such as fellowship hour, consultations, workshops and seminars.  Parents will be able to take advantage of extra programs for their child such as: reading readiness, story hour tea party, self esteem workshops, and anger management workshops. One objective of the Parent Resource center is to provide more opportunities for parents to volunteer and to become a voice in their child's school. The resource center already hosts such activities such as bingo, art classes and spaghetti dinners.  Even more important are the activities for the parent and child together. The parent center offers a three week course for Moms and their child called I-Mom Snack.  Participants get a certificate and award upon completion.   Kathleen Bosley is Parent Liaison to the Resource Center.  Mrs. Bosley, a parent of two children who attend Heather Hills and an instructional assistant at the school, was instrumental is starting the resource center.  The Parent Resource Center at Heather Hills Elementary is a great step towards empowering parents with the right tools and knowledge to raise healthy, happy, successful children.

Heather Hills Supports Literacy with Dr. Seuss and Science

Posted by

Students and parents at Heather Hills Elementary were treated to a night of Dr. Seuss and Science.  On October 29th the Highlanders had their Family Reading Night.  Along with dinner and a tribute to Dr. Seuss with a storytelling presentation, students and their families were able to participate at a variety of stations that promoted different aspects of literacy.   The stations included alphabet cookies, cooking with kids, non-fiction books about spiders, jokes and riddles, computers, environmental print, Reading Frog Games, reader's theatre, and storytelling. One of the highlights of the evening came in the form of a magic show. The presenter combined optical illusions and science to entertain and educate his audience.  Students, parents, and staff alike enjoyed the night full of reading, magic, and fun.
